…unless you’re playing with your yoga friends!
Our yoga class started out meeting in the “all purpose room” at the Coralville Rec. Center…two sessions ago they moved us to the racquetball court. Who knew the Coralville Rec. Center even HAD a racquetball court??? (Well, I did…but I didn’t know where it was. Turns out it’s through the gym…and then through the weight room.)
Our instructor brings a nice dim lamp, candles, her ipod and speakers and we fan out in a semi-circle around the court. It’s actually a very nice space…and I much prefer the wood floor to the linoleum in the all-purpose room.
So a couple weeks ago, one of the other yoga regulars said, “I wonder what it would be like to actually come here to PLAY RACQUETBALL instead of do yoga.”
Somebody else said, “I used to play racquetball…about 15-20 years ago.”
So did I! In fact, I still have my racket, my glove, my safety glasses…I even still have my racquetball shoes! I haven’t played in 18 years (I used to play regularly when we lived in the Twin Cities and were walking distance from the Y)…but I could never bring myself to get rid of my stuff because I always thought maybe I’d have an opportunity to play again one day.
Well…that attitude paid off last night because the three of us made a date to go play! (I have to say, the court looks A LOT different when you’re there to play racquetball rather than do yoga…it’s much brighter! It’s also hard to believe we squeeze 12 people in there on yoga nights.)
The Rec. Center provided a written set of rules, but the copy was so bad we couldn’t read it. Oh well. Who needs rules???
We got the general idea…stand in the box to serve…hit the ball…run a little if you feel like it…it can bounce as many times as you want…LAUGH A LOT!!!!!
We had so much fun we’re going to make it a regular thing!
I love racquetball. Randy and I play twice a week, and it’s so much fun–and a good workout.
BTW, my 13yo just read Monkey Man–and is impatiently awaiting the sequel now!
It IS a good workout! I’d forgotten how good! That’s great that you and your husband play together…I should get Bob to play again, too. He used to be much more serious about his racquetball than I was!
Your 13yo (daughter, right?) only has to wait another 3-4 months for the sequel! I’m glad she liked MM!!!
