An e-mail that made me smile
I got a great e-mail from a kid last night. He wrote, “Please come to my school. I want to surprise my friend for his birthday.” I wish I could…
Oh, wouldn’t that be great?
I loved his sincerity…not to mention the idea that I could be someone’s birthday present! 🙂
I wonder if this is some sort of trend. I had a child email me last week and invite me to come speak at his school. He wanted to know my rates and what I would require. I thanked him and told him to tell his school librarian about me.
I’ve had a fair number of those, too. (I just thought this one was unique…it wasn’t just “come to my school,” it was “come to my school so I can surprise my friend for his birthday.”) And I handle it the same way you do. I heard Jerry Spinelli tell a story at Chautauqua about a kid who did that and he eventually got an invitation out of the deal…but it hasn’t resulted in an invitation for me. Yet. Maybe one day…I’d LOVE to go to a school where the invitation came because a child suggested me to the powers that be.
