…during Preteen’s graduation from elementary school on Tuesday. I couldn’t help it…it’s been such a nice school. There’s been such a sense of community there (and I’m glad they keep kids in elementary school through sixth grade here). Preteen has been in that school since first grade…he’s grown up with these kids (something Teen never really got to do). And I’ve gotten to watch this same group of kids grow up…and Preteen has such a nice group of friends, for which I am very grateful.
We moved here from a community where neither of my kids fit in. Neither one had good friends. Preteen got along okay in kindergarten, but school wasn’t so great for Teen (we ended up pulling him out of school and homeschooling him for a while, and then he started college very young…) And our neighborhood was H*LL for them. Really! My kids couldn’t play outside in their own yard without the neighbor kids coming over and tormenting them. But it’s not like that here. Both my kids have made a place for themselves (both academically and socially). And I think that’s why I couldn’t stop the watery eyes the other day…school is not a wonderful place for all children…but THIS school has been a wonderful place for Preteen.
So yesterday I took Preteen to Des Moines for the day. We went to the zoo, and to the science museum (where Preteen actually got to be on TV…they broadcast the weather for the 12:00 and 5:00 news from the science museum, which I thought was really cool…I had no idea they did that), and out to dinner at the Macaroni Grill (third time Macaroni Grill has come up in this blog!). We had a great day, just the two of us to celebrate the beginning of summer vacation…
Sounds like a great start to the summer!
Sounds lovely. I would have had watery eyes too!
